Scientists Discover a Massive Fish Colony Under Antarctica's Ice

Beneath hundreds of meters of Antarctic ice, in water barely above freezing and almost total darkness, scientists have found something nobody expected: a city of fish nests stretching across an area nearly the size of Orlando, Florida.

The Discovery

In 2022, researchers aboard the German research vessel Polarstern, operated by the Alfred Wegener Institute, were surveying the seafloor of the Weddell Sea near Antarctica's Filchner Ice Shelf when their cameras began picking up something strange — circular depressions in the seabed, spaced with almost mechanical regularity, roughly one every few square meters.

As the survey continued, the scale of what they were looking at became clear: an estimated 60 million active nests, spread across at least 240 square kilometers of ocean floor.

To put that in perspective, the largest icefish nesting group ever documented before this discovery numbered only in the dozens. What the team had stumbled onto instead was, by a massive margin, the largest known fish breeding colony on Earth.

Meet the Builder: The Icefish With No Red Blood

The nests belong to Jonah's icefish (Neopagetopsis ionah), a member of a small, strange family of Antarctic fish that are the only known vertebrates on the planet to survive without hemoglobin or red blood cells.

Their blood runs almost clear, an evolutionary trade-off that would be fatal in most environments but works precisely because Antarctic waters are so cold and so rich in dissolved oxygen that the fish can absorb enough oxygen directly through blood plasma alone. Icefish also carry natural antifreeze proteins in their blood, allowing them to survive comfortably in water that would freeze most other vertebrates solid.

Each circular nest, built around a hard rock center and roughly 75 centimeters across, holds around 1,000 to 1,700 eggs, typically guarded by a single male. The colony's overall biomass has been estimated at around 60,000 tonnes of fish — a staggering concentration of life in a part of the ocean once assumed to be relatively empty.

Why the Location Matters

The nesting site isn't randomly placed. Researchers found the colony sits precisely where warmer deep water flows up from the depths of the Weddell Sea onto the shallower shelf, keeping local seabed temperatures in the narrow range — around 0°C to 0.5°C — that appears essential for icefish egg development. That precision suggests the fish are cueing into very specific oceanographic conditions to choose their nesting grounds, rather than settling anywhere convenient.

The discovery is also reshaping scientists' understanding of the wider food web in the region. Data from transmitter-tagged Weddell seals showed that around 90% of their diving activity centered on this exact stretch of seafloor — strong evidence the icefish colony functions as a major food source anchoring an entire local ecosystem, from seals down to the scavenging sea stars and crustaceans drawn to abandoned nests at the colony's edges.

Still There, Still Thriving

For years after the initial 2022 discovery, a key question remained: was this a one-off event, or a stable, long-term breeding ground? In 2026, researchers returned with an autonomous underwater robot named LASSIE — short for Low-Altitude Survey System for Icefish — which spent 48 continuous hours gliding just above the seafloor beneath the Filchner Ice Shelf. The follow-up survey confirmed the colony hadn't shrunk or shifted; it remains intact, active, and just as densely packed as when it was first mapped.

Why It Matters

Beyond the sheer novelty of the find, researchers argue the discovery strengthens the case for stronger marine protections in the region. The Weddell Sea has so far been shielded largely by its remoteness and difficult sea-ice conditions rather than formal conservation status, and scientists involved in the research have pointed to the colony as a clear argument for establishing a fully protected marine area before increasing human activity in polar waters puts pressure on a breeding ground this significant.

It's also a reminder of how little of the ocean floor humans have actually mapped in detail — even now, only a small fraction of the seafloor has been surveyed closely, meaning discoveries on this scale may still be waiting in places no one has looked yet.
