Why You Feel Exhausted All Winter, Even After Eight Hours of Sleep

winter tiredness

The alarm rings, it's still dark, and your quilt feels like the safest place on earth. You slept a full eight hours, yet by 3 p.m. you're yawning at your desk. If winter always seems to drain you, you're not imagining it.

1. Less daylight confuses your body clock

Your body uses light to know when to be awake. With shorter, greyer days, it produces more melatonin, the hormone that makes you sleepy, for longer. The result is that groggy, can't-wake-up feeling.

2. Low vitamin D

Your skin makes vitamin D from sunlight. In winter, we spend more time indoors and cover up when we do go out. Vitamin D deficiency is common in India, and tiredness is one of its frequent signs.

3. You're moving less

Cold mornings make skipping the walk very tempting. But less movement often means less energy, not more. It's a cycle that's easy to fall into.

4. Heavy comfort food

Winter brings hearty stews, buttery breads, rich desserts and endless cups of sweet tea or hot chocolate. Large, rich meals can leave you sluggish, particularly in the afternoon.

5. Winter blues

Some people experience low mood, low energy and oversleeping that follow the seasons. In more severe cases, this is called seasonal affective disorder (SAD), and it deserves proper attention.

How to get your energy back

  • Get morning sunlight. Spend 15–20 minutes outdoors or by a sunny window early in the day.
  • Keep a steady sleep schedule, even on weekends.
  • Move every day. A brisk walk, yoga or a home workout all count.
  • Eat lighter at lunch and include protein, vegetables and whole grains.
  • Stay hydrated. We drink less water when it's cold, and mild dehydration can cause fatigue.
  • Get your levels checked. A simple blood test can show if your vitamin D, iron or B12 levels are low.

When to see a doctor

If tiredness lasts for weeks, affects your work or relationships, or comes with low mood, consult a doctor. Fatigue can also be linked to thyroid problems or anaemia, which need proper treatment.
