Koduri Bala Lingam: Kindness Amid Crisis
In Hyderabad’s Balanagar, three buildings owned by a businessman Koduri Bala Lingam housed many contractual laborers. These residents faced significant challenges during the nationwide lockdown, as factories and commercial establishments closed, leaving them unable to pay rent or support their families.
A Generous Gesture
When a tenant approached Bala Lingam requesting a deferral on rent payments, he decided to offer more than just a postponement. He informed his 70 tenants that they did not need to pay rent for two months, alleviating their immediate financial burdens. This decision came in the early phase of the lockdown.
Humble Beginnings
Bala Lingam's own journey to success began in 1995 when he moved from Sircilla, Telangana to Hyderabad in search of work. At just 16 years old, he took on various odd jobs, including working as a table-cleaner in a bar, to escape poverty. Over time, he established a successful welding company that now employs numerous individuals. Despite his current comfortable lifestyle, he remains deeply connected to his past struggles and empathetic towards those facing similar hardships.
A Heartfelt Sacrifice
Bala Lingam's decision to waive nearly ₹3.5 lakhs in rent was driven by his desire to use his success to help others. He emphasized that money holds little importance in such trying times and felt compelled to support his tenants. Many of these tenants, originally from Bihar, were left jobless and could have faced severe consequences had they attempted to return home during the lockdown.
Ensuring Safety and Support
Disturbed by images of migrants struggling to reach their homes, Bala Lingam assured his tenants that they would not need to worry about rent or food. He only asked that they stay indoors and practice social distancing to combat the coronavirus. His efforts were successful, as all his tenants complied with the safety measures, while he took on the responsibility of meeting their needs.
Continuing Commitment
As the lockdown eased, some tenants began to resume work and started paying rent again. Bala Lingam remains supportive, reassuring his tenants not to worry about their financial obligations. He expresses his satisfaction in being able to help and remains committed to doing more if necessary. His actions exemplify the spirit of community and generosity in challenging times. Truly inspirational!
