Discovering Lakshadweep: A Guide To Paradise

Lakshadweep

As a captivating island, Lakshadweep consists of spectacular coasts, prosperous coconut gardens, and rich marine treasures, creating an irresistible allure for voyagers seeking secluded paradises. Located about 750 km in the direction of the Arabian Ocean from the Maldives, these islets are regulated under the Rules concerning

Laccadive Islands, Minicoy Islands, and Amindivi Islands (Restricted Entry and Residential Rules), 1967. However, accessing Lakshadweep’s beauty requires individuals to obtain an entry permit, which is a must for all non-native visitors wanting to explore Lakshadweep.

Entry Permits

The process of obtaining an entry permit into the region has been considerably streamlined thanks to the Lakshadweep Administration portal. Prospective tourists can apply for an e-permit online, and within seven days, the application is processed.

The e-permit is valid for 30 days, so planning the trip in advance is necessary. The application requires specifying which islands the visitor plans to visit from the tropical archipelago, featuring 36 atolls and coral reefs.

Islands of Wonder

Lakshadweep is home to 36 atolls and coral reefs, but only a few are occupied, each one a one-of-a-kind treasure. Among others, some of the striking islands for tourists include Kadmat, Minicoy, Bangaram, Kavaratti, and Agatti.

Exceptions to the permit requirement are made for government officials, members of the armed forces, and their families who either live or visit these islands for work or settlement purposes.

Ideal Time for Exploration

Plan your visit to Lakshadweep between October and February when humidity levels are lowest, ensuring glorious sunshine throughout your stay. This time offers an ideal environment for sandy-toed vacations.

Navigating the Journey

As the primary gateway to Lakshadweep, Kochi offers both flight and ship services for tourists. Among the islands, an airstrip is exclusively present in Agatti; it takes approximately one hour and thirty minutes to reach Lakshadweep from Kochi by air.

Between October and May, visitors can set off from Agatti on a boat ride that allows them to explore destinations such as Kadmat and Kavaratti Islands. Additionally, helicopter rides from Agatti to Kavaratti are available during the monsoon season, with availability contingent upon helicopter schedules.

Sea travelers have a choice of seven ships for their journey: MV Kavaratti, MV Arabian Sea, MV Lakshadweep Sea, MV Lagoon, MV Corals, MV Amindivi, and MV Minicoy. These ships depart from Kochi to the Lakshadweep Islands, with journey durations between 14 and 18 hours depending on the destination island.

Accommodations are available in various classes: A/C First Class offers two-berth cabins, A/C Second Class provides four-berth cabins, and there is also a push back/Bunk Class featuring comfortable A/C seating. Each ship has a doctor on board to manage any emergencies that might occur during the voyage.

Plan for a memorable journey to this Arabian Sea paradise by understanding the entry requirements and transportation options, ensuring a lovely and unforgettable experience amidst Lakshadweep's untouched landscapes, forging memories destined for longevity.
