Most people think of flossing as a chore aimed squarely at their teeth — something dentists nag about to prevent cavities and bad breath. But a growing body of research suggests that thin piece of string might be doing quiet work well beyond your mouth, with possible ties to heart health, stroke risk, and long-term inflammation throughout the body.
The Mouth-Body Connection
The theory behind this link centers on inflammation. When plaque builds up between teeth and below the gumline — areas a toothbrush alone can't fully reach — it can trigger gum disease, or periodontitis, a chronic inflammatory condition. That inflammation doesn't necessarily stay contained to the mouth. Researchers have long suspected that oral bacteria and the inflammatory response they provoke can enter the bloodstream, potentially contributing to inflammation and plaque buildup elsewhere in the body, including in the arteries.
This connection made headlines again after research presented at the American Stroke Association's 2025 conference, which analyzed roughly 6,000 participants over a 25-year period as part of the long-running Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities study. The findings showed that people who flossed regularly had meaningfully lower rates of ischemic stroke and atrial fibrillation compared to those who didn't — a connection that held up even after accounting for other habits like brushing and dental visits, suggesting flossing may have some independent effect of its own.
The American Heart Association took the connection seriously enough to issue an updated scientific statement in December 2025, highlighting mounting evidence linking gum disease to atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, including heart attack, stroke, atrial fibrillation, and heart failure.
A History of Skepticism Worth Mentioning
It's worth noting this wasn't always considered strong science. Back in 2015, US health authorities quietly removed a long-standing flossing recommendation from official dietary guidelines, citing a lack of rigorous, high-quality evidence at the time — a moment that generated plenty of headlines about flossing being "debunked."
What's changed since then is largely the quality and scale of the research. Newer studies draw on much larger populations tracked over much longer periods, and the association between oral hygiene habits and cardiovascular outcomes has grown more consistent as a result. That said, most of this research remains observational — meaning it can show a strong association between flossing and better outcomes without definitively proving that flossing itself is the direct cause. People who floss regularly may also tend toward other health-conscious habits that researchers can't fully separate out.
Why the Mechanism Makes Biological Sense
Even with that caveat, the underlying biology gives the theory real weight. Chronic inflammation is already a well-established contributor to atherosclerosis, the slow buildup of plaque inside artery walls that drives most heart attacks and strokes. Periodontal disease is, at its core, a chronic inflammatory condition — so a pathway connecting the two isn't far-fetched; it fits within what's already understood about how inflammation drives cardiovascular risk more broadly.

None of this means flossing replaces diet, exercise, or medical care as a heart-health strategy — cardiovascular disease remains driven primarily by far larger factors.
