What Are Acai Bowls, and Where Can You Try Them in India?
A decade ago, most people in India had never heard the word "acai." Today it shows up on café menus from Mumbai to Bangalore, usually served in a thick, vibrant purple bowl piled high with fruit, granola, and seeds. But what exactly is inside that bowl — and is it actually worth the hype?
What Is an Acai Bowl, Exactly?
Acai (pronounced ah-sigh-ee) is a small, dark purple berry native to the Amazon rainforest, traditionally harvested in Brazil and neighboring regions. The berries themselves are rarely eaten fresh outside South America — they spoil quickly after harvest — so most of the world encounters acai as a frozen purée or powder instead.
An acai bowl is essentially a thick smoothie made by blending that frozen acai purée with other fruits, often banana or berries, until it reaches a dense, almost sorbet-like consistency — thick enough to eat with a spoon rather than drink through a straw. It's then topped with a mix of fresh fruit, granola, nuts, seeds, and sometimes a drizzle of honey or nut butter, turning it into a full meal rather than just a drink.
Nutritionally, acai berries are notable for their antioxidant content, along with healthy fats and fiber. That said, the overall healthiness of an acai bowl depends heavily on its toppings — a bowl loaded with granola, honey, chocolate, and nut butter can carry a significant amount of added sugar, even though the base itself is nutrient-dense.
Why Acai Bowls Caught On in India
Acai bowls arrived in India largely through returning travelers and the broader global wellness-café wave — the same cultural shift that's brought matcha lattes, oat milk, and cold-pressed juices into Indian cities. Founders of several India-based acai cafés have described discovering the format abroad, in cities like Sydney or Dubai, and being surprised such a fresh, wholesome option wasn't yet easily available back home.
Because fresh acai berries aren't grown or sold locally, virtually every café in India works with imported frozen acai purée or sorbet, which is why acai bowls tend to sit at a slightly higher price point than a typical fruit bowl or smoothie.
Where to Try Acai Bowls in India
Mumbai has emerged as one of India's strongest acai bowl scenes. Sequel Bistro and Juice Bar is known for its avocado-topped Power Bowl alongside its acai offerings, JuCo Café serves a berry-and-yoghurt acai smoothie bowl as well as an avocado-spirulina version, and Açai by the Bay leans fully into the trend with a menu built entirely around the berry.
Bangalore has a growing cluster of specialty acai cafés. Acai Theory in Indiranagar has built its entire menu around imported acai, serving it as sorbet-based bowls layered with fruit and superfoods, while Acai Berry Cafe rounds out the city's offerings with smoothies, smoothie bowls, and wholesome meals.
Delhi offers acai bowls largely through Greenr Cafe, a vegetarian and vegan-friendly chain with multiple outlets across the city (and one in Mumbai as well), where smoothie and acai bowls sit alongside a broader all-day breakfast menu. You can also visit Lyfberry in Khan Market to explore their six signature bowls (like the High Lyf or Zen Lyf) with over 30 toppings.
Pune has its own share of lifestyle cafés serving smoothie and acai bowls. One O Eight Lifestyle Cafe in Koregaon Park is known for its Dragon Smoothie Bowl and Cacao Berry bowl, while Chafa Cafe & Studio, Sante Spa Cuisine, Wild Sugar Patisserie, and The Vigour Kart each offer their own versions across the city. In Kharadi, a café simply named Acai Bowl serves the dish as its centerpiece.
Goa keeps things bohemian, with Artjuna Cafe in Assagao serving an acai bowl loaded with raspberries, blueberries, and pomegranate, and nearby Mojigao offering acai-adjacent smoothies as part of its all-day brunch menu.
Hyderabad rounds out the scene through its Jubilee Hills café cluster — Conçu is known for some of the city's best smoothie bowls, Alive Cafe offers its own health-forward menu in the same neighborhood, and 45th Avenue has built a following around its Acai Smoothie.
A Quick Tip Before You Order
Since menus and portion sizes vary widely by café, it's worth checking the ingredient list before ordering if you're watching sugar intake — many cafés offer the option to customize toppings or ask for less honey or granola, letting you keep the antioxidant benefits of the acai base without the extra sugar load.
